Serving Kenosha & Its Historic Landmarks
Kenosha Lighthouse Station – A Historic Landmark
The Kenosha Lighthouse Station, also known as the Southport Light Station, stands proudly on Simmons Island overlooking Lake Michigan. First lit in 1866, the conical tower built from Cream City brick rises 55 feet, with its focal plane elevated by the island’s bluff to guide ships safely into the harbor. Its position at the mouth of the historic Southport harbor made it an essential aid to navigation during Kenosha’s growth as a Great Lakes port.
The light station complex includes the 1867 keeper’s dwelling, restored as a museum that preserves the daily life of keepers and the history of Great Lakes shipping. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the lantern level seasonally for sweeping views of the shoreline, breakwaters, and the downtown lakefront. Exhibits showcase maritime artifacts, period furnishings, and stories of the fishermen, shipbuilders, and sailors who shaped the city’s waterfront economy.
After periods of deactivation and restoration in the twentieth century, the lighthouse returned to service as a private aid to navigation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it’s a beloved lakefront destination: a place to walk the boardwalks, watch sailboats slip past the pierheads, and connect with Kenosha’s maritime heritage. As a visual beacon and cultural touchstone, the Kenosha Lighthouse Station remains the city’s most enduring landmark.
